Zodiac Calendar
The Lunar New Year begins on January 29th. There is a 12-year cycle of animals that are called the zodiac calendar; 2025 is the year of the snake. The snake symbolizes power, intelligence, and agility. The animals associated with the years started as a fable. The fable told how many animals raced, but only the top 12 could have an eternal spot in the calendar. Some animals that didn’t make it include the cat, parrot, and lynx.
How to Celebrate
Although there are varying traditions throughout Asia for how to welcome the new year, most people hand out red envelopes filled with money, do some cleaning to get rid of last year’s bad luck, and light lanterns and fireworks. A lot of the traditions have to do with luck. The new year promises a fresh start, so most people do everything in their power to make it their best one yet!
