On the afternoon of February 9th, 2025, football fans everywhere were either in their seats or glued to their TVs. This was the day they’ve been waiting for. This was Super Bowl Sunday at Caesars Sports Dome in New Orleans, Louisiana.
As we waited in anticipation, we were witness to something never done before, in the form of the National Anthem. Why was it different? This year, the piano accompanied the Anthem for the first time. John Batiste, a Louisiana born artist, sang the National Anthem at the Super Bowl, but there was a twist when he threw in the element of the piano. This new style touched the hearts of fans as it gave the anthem a jazzy, New Orleans feel.
After this powerful National Anthem, the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs took the field. These star-studded rosters featured Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts along with newly acquired running back Saquon Barkley and star wide receiver AJ Brown against the Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver Xavier Worthy.
Stars packed the stadium not only on the field, but off as well. This was not new to Chiefs’ fans as one of the most famous people in the world, Taylor Swift, is dating Chiefs TE Travis Kelce. Other celebrities in attendance included Jay-Z, Adam Sandler, Bradley Cooper and President Donald Trump – an apparent Chiefs fan. Everyone took their seats and we were ready for kickoff.
The referee flipped the commemorative coin, and both teams went to their sidelines. Coaches Andy Reid and Nick Sirianni prepared their teams one last time before the kickoff. The Eagles, who came in with a 14-3 record in the regular season were the underdogs. The Chiefs, who entered with a 15-2 record and as winners of the last two Super Bowl victories, were the clear favorites.
The game started out slowly as both teams were forced to punt for most of the first quarter. It wasn’t until the end of the first quarter when we saw our first score. This came by the Eagles’ famous ‘tush push’ (a play where everyone lines up around the QB, Jalen Hurts, who dives forward and gets pushed from behind by 2-3 players). From there, the Eagles kept adding to their lead. The score was 24-0 at halftime; the Eagles were destroying the Chiefs.
Luckily, the Super Bowl halftime show was very interesting and a big hit. Kendrick Lamar performed 11 different songs. He played hit songs like “Squabble Up,” then “Humble,” “DNA,” and “Euphoria.” He also performed “Man at the Garden” and “Peekaboo.” SZA showed up to sing “Luther” and “All The Stars.” The finale was Lamar’s biggest hits “Not Like Us” and “TV Off.”
The 3rd quarter of the game was more of the same as the Eagles scored one more touchdown and kicked a field goal before we saw the Chiefs kick two field goals. This made the score 34-6 with the Eagles on top.
The 4th quarter was the most exciting quarter of the game. After two field goals of over 45 yards each by Eagles kicker Jake Elliot, the Chiefs gained a sudden surge of 4th quarter energy which propelled them to score two straight touchdowns. With a couple seconds left in the game, the score was 40-22 with the Eagles still on top when the Chiefs threw a hail mary and the Eagles linebacker, Zach Baun, came down with the interception. The Eagles win! The Eagles win! SUPER BOWL CHAMPS! This loss broke the Chiefs’ two year Super Bowl streak. The Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes 3-peat attempt had failed!!!
We can look back at the 2025 Super Bowl and think not only about the game, but the history that came with it. From the National Anthem to the Eagles hoisting the Lombardi trophy for the second time, it was a great Super Bowl and an awesome way to kick off a brand new year in sports.
