The Cooking Lab. It’s like FACS class but every week. If you are looking for an activity to do outside of school, you should try the Cooking Lab of Port Washington. It seems like only people who go to Smusht or go to cooking classes there know what or where it is. Well, the Cooking Lab is a local business run by Chefs Mathiew Lanfant and Michelle Capobianco, that offers cooking classes for kids, adults, and families. It is located on Main Street, right next to Smusht.
At the Cooking Lab, you can book a class for once or twice a week. The class schedule works like this: “sweet, savory, sweet, savory.” That means one week participants are making cinnamon rolls, the next week you’re making chicken teriyaki, then it’s lava cake (it’s hard to move), and then it’s dumplings. It goes back and forth between desserts and savory foods.
One dish you will enjoy cooking is butter cookies. Chef Mat calls them very special, and they got a Michelin star! That means if you make them on your own, you’re a Michelin star chef! The co-owner Chef Mat said, “I try to give confidence to the kids, so they don’t feel confronted while cooking and worried about getting burned and using a knife, or afraid of cutting themselves.” The burning and cutting rate is actually low. It’s only when people are overthinking it or underthinking it. Chef Mat added that cooking classes let you “Try something new, mix in spices and give things flavor in the process of baking, so when you are back in your kitchen you know what to do.”
